Day 9 (14th July, 2018)

We have been so lucky with the weather. It was warm and sunny Saturday morning. Before heading to Amsterdam, we had a nice breakfast in a place called SugarStars. We took the train from Zaandam to Amsterdam Centraal. We were so looking forward to explore the city of canals. I did my first roadtrip by bicycle exact 25 years ago and also then Amsterdam was on my ”must to explore” list. Did you know that Amsterdam is the most bicycle friendly city in the world? They say that the city is owned byt the cyclists. You need to walk with caution and keep your eyes and ears open to avoid any collision with the cyclists. We stopped by the canal and had a drink of Heineken’s cold beer. At the same time we were amused by some peculiar boat travellers, who were passing by.

We decided to visit Rijksmuseum to see the paintings of the famous artists like Rembrandt, Vermeer, van Gogh, Monet…Honestly we had a quite quick visit, because we didn’t want to spend the rest of the day inside the museum. If you want to observe all the pieces of art, you must reserve at least one day there.

6FBEE6B3-97C3-4AB3-AD8C-218EAFE6CBF7

After a few hours of high culture, we decided to lower the requirements of our cultural experiences a bit. Also it was a good time of the day, as it was getting dark and the red street lights were turned on. We walked through the red light district ”De Wallen” of Amsterdam and wondered what this tourist attraction can offer. Unfortunately not much for us and we decided to return back to hotel. We had a long day ahead us in the next day.

Day 8 (13th July, 2018)

Day 8 was mostly driving – On Friday the 13th we had a long day ahead us. Prague – Amsterdam almost 900 km and at least 10 hours in a car – not the most sensible plan, but we knew it wasn’t a challenging task considering that we were driving through Germany. We left the hotel in Prague at 8 am. and we were in Amsterdam at 6:10 pm. So we managed to drive 900 km in 10 hours and 10 minutes including 3 short pitstops and one lunch break. Somewhere in the half way the oncoming traffic was stopped due to an accident and the tailback was at least 10 km long. We were lucky that we didn’t face any traffic jams.

By the way my car has never reach the speed of 152 km per hour until the 13th July, 2018. The average speed on German highway ”Autobahn” is around 130 km per hour.

8FFE49C9-DD38-4242-BD32-3E4B14673EAA

We were in Amsterdam after 6 o’clock in the evening. We had booked a hotel from Zaandam, which is a city close to Amsterdam. Train from Zaandam to Amsterdam – Centraal takes max. 12 minutes. We were very pleased to the city of Zaandam and its surroundings. We had a nice dinner in Italian Restaurant and that was all we needed after the long day on the road. Couldn’t wait to get some sleep. On the ninth day we were ready to explore Amsterdam.

Day 7 (12th July, 2018)

Prague, the Capital of The Czech Rebuplic was on the list on Day 7. During the last few days we’ve been like kids in a candy store, far too many beautiful places and sights around us. In Prague we would have had possibility to take a hop on, hop off -bus tour as well, but we decided to take just a day ticket to metro. Our hotel was a couple of metro stations away from the old town of Prague in a place called Dejvice. We hopped off at the station of Staromestska and decided to withdraw some Korunas from the nearest ATM. After withdrawal some money one man came to me and ask me to change my money to smaller 500 notes. Sorry, but I have travelled a lot to learn my lessons and I do know the tricks of the local cheaters. The second thing related to money, which has been a bit bizarre on our roadtrip so far, is that although the countries are the members of EU and there aren’t any customs formalities at the borders, but when you drive to the petrol station to refuel, you must be awake! a) what is a valid currency in this specific country…zloty, euro, forint, koruna, krone, krona? b) what is a currency exchange rate at that moment? c) when you withdraw some money, you better count the zeros twice, otherwise you might end up to withdraw more than was intended.

We decided to have a walking tour in Prague, because all the attractions are within walking distance of each other. First we walked to Charles Bridge ”Karluv Most”. There were lots of tourits and the bridge was very crowded, but we managed to get over the bridge and river Vltava. The bridge is decorated by 30 different historic statues.

E43E705F-B029-4B82-8356-4F1190C6EC34

We had a lunch in Prague Castle side in a place called Rainbow’s End Cafe and Art Garden. It is a very nice Art cafe hosted by Sophie & Pinar. We highly recommend this place, great staff, good coffee and relaxed atmosphere. Wifi password will say it all ”lifeisnow”. I could have stayed there the whole day.

12D8EBAC-7AA5-45F9-A07C-3D4707956191

After lunch we walked up to the Prague Castle or maybe I should say that we climbed up to the castle hill by stepping up many stairs. The castle and the views were magnificent. On the way back to old town of Prague, we deserved one of the local delicacies ”Chimney” with homemade vanilla ice cream.

EEDD6E26-5385-4936-B373-FC4F3DB0D5FB

We’ve got a hint that we should visit one of the Black Light Theatres in Prague. So we booked the ticket to one show called ”Aspects of Alice”. It was a great experience and the show was very entertaining. Unfortunately it was not allowed to take any photos or videos of the show, but you definitely must experience the Black Light Theatre yourself when visiting Prague next time.

Although I am not fond of beers, but that is a ”must” to drink at least one mug of cold Czech draft beer.

Day 6 (11th July, 2018)

We woke up in the rainy Budapest. We were lucky with the weather. Yesterday was hot and sunny when we were exploring the city, today was rainy, but it didn’t matter, we were going to spend the most of day in a car anyway. Before leaving Budapest I had a date with my dear friend and my ”namesake” another Piia. First we had a breakfast in a place called 3 Pajamas. Breakfast Club, which I can highly recommend. Nice and cozy little breakfast cafe with the friendly staff was just around the corner of our hotel. It was all we needed in the mornings … a big portion of good coffee to get the engine running again.

Day 6 agenda was to have a quick lunch at 11:15 am. with Piia at her work place in IBM Budapest and then hit the road again towards Prague. I had managed to find my way with the help of my phone’s navigator so far, but today I drove totally to the wrong direction. In the end we found ourselves somewhere in the suburb of Budapest. The address was supposed to be Neumann János utca 1, but somehow I missed the first part ”Neumann” and there are quite a many streets called János utcas in Hungary. So we ended up to have a nice little tour in the suburbs of Budapest until we found our way to IBM office.

Day 6 we were on the road again driving from Budapest to Prague approx. 540 km. When we were planning our route, we first decided to visit Vienna, which was along the way. But you cannot just ”visit” Vienna, you need to stay a couple of days in that beautiful city. So we decided to skip it and have a short visit in Bratislava the capital of Slovakia instead, which is situated very near the border of Austria. We drove up to the hill to see the beautiful castle  of ”Bratislavsky hrad” and took some pictures of the views of Bratislava and Danube river.

Day 5 (10th July, 2018)

On the fifth day, the whole day was dedicated to Budapest, one of my favourite city in Europe. Last time I was here 15 years ago in 2003, so it was definitely a time for a new visit to refresh the memories a bit. One word that best desrcipes this city is ”glamorous”.  Budapest is glamorous in every way, at daylight and at night. When you look at the city from the top of the Gellért Hill like in the picture below, you can see Danube, the second-longest river in Europe. Budapest is divided into two parts; Buda on the left hand side and Pest on the right hand side of Danube.

F478B30C-72B4-40A6-BB4B-E2D26498BD5A

As we had reserved only one day for exploring the city, we decided to choose the easiest way to do it. We bought a day ticket for ”hop-on, hop-off” bus, plus we got a night boat trip on Danube river for free, which was a good deal. Now the plan for day 5 was ready to be accomplished from early morning till midnight. We didn’t just sit in a bus, we also walked a lot and fortunately I had my sneakers on. After the long day we should have visited one of the baths of Budapest, but unfortunately we didn’t have time for bathing this time.

No wonder why Budapest is also known as the Paris of the East. It has the same nuances; the impressive historical buildings and the bridges. Most of the buildings along the Danube river are on the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Site.

6AF22D89-941D-4989-89CC-7915889F15BD

We had a boat trip late at night on Danube river and I think that the most spectacular views in Budapest are fully illuminated parliament house, Buda Castle and bridges at night. It seems that the city has put a lot of effort into lighting. All the LED lighting has been installed by the company called GE Lighting.

Hungarian Parliament glittering in its original magnificent blaze

Renovation work at the Hungarian Parliament Building, seat of the National Assembly and one of Europe’s oldest legislative buildings, has seen the installation of a new lighting system designed to highlight its outstanding architectural beauty.  A rolling programme of restoration has involved experts drawn from a wide range of specialist areas and GE Lighting was tasked with designing and installing a system that would create an innovative lighting solution while respecting the building’s history.  The new illumination, based on the superb yellow and white light of GE HPS (High Pressure Sodium) and CMH (Ceramic Metal Halide) lamps, was formally switched on on 20th August 2011, a hugely symbolic date as this was Hungary’s National Day, commemorating the foundation of the state.

They say that Finnish and Hungarian belongs to the same language family, Finno-Ugric. Yes, that must be true, because I could hear that there  is a lot of similarities between these two languages. I felt like I could easily join to some random discussion on the street, although I do not understand a word.

But in the end I just love the street lights of Budapest.

Day 4 (9th July, 2018)

Day 4 – Our target was to drive from Krakow, Poland to Budapest, Hungary. Because the distance is only 400 km, we decided to stay in Krakow a bit longer. We left from the hotel around 10 am. and wanted to have a breakfast in the old town of Krakow. The old town, known as ”Stare Miasto” in Polish, is one of the UNESO’s world heritage sites. The architecture is very unique and beautiful, it has features from both renaissance and baroque periods. The buildings have a long history and the town itself has been under the foreign rule several times. There are lots of interesting sights and tourist attractions around the area. We had reserved only two nights and one entire day to spend in Krakow, which definately was not enough. I’m certainly going to visit this beautiful historical town again.

3F693A57-F707-4B12-9F14-492ACF371B33

After the breakfast we had a short visit to Oscar Schindler’s Enamel Factory ”Fabryka Emalia Oskara Schindlera” which is located just a few kilometers to south-east from the old town of Krakow. We did’t enter to the museum, because the tickets were ”sold out”. So, next time we better buy our tickets online in advance. If you have read the book of Schindler’s list or seen the movie, you might remember person called Izaak Stern. He was the accountant for Schindler’s Enamel Factory and one of Oscar Schindlers trusted man. In the movie the role of Izaak Stern was played by Ben Kingsley.

We also had a plan to visit ”Wieliczka” Salt Mine, but when we got there, it was already 1 pm. and the line in front of the ticket sale was very long, so we decided to skip our visit there. You should reserve 3 hours at least for the guided tour in Salt Mine of Krakow.

AF1C7B2D-0785-4129-A92D-56E6D63A2CA3

In the afternoon we were on the road again, driving from Krakow, Poland to Budapest, Hungary. If you look at the map above, you probably don’t notice that there is a thin grey line, the borders of Slovakia. So, our target was to drive through Slovakia to the next country, Hungary. Unfortunately we didn’t have time and plans to stay in Slovakia over night, although the country is very beautiful and there are definitely a lot to see and explor. The landscape is very green and on the way you can admire the mountain range of High Tatras. We also passed the town of Zakopane, which is located very south of Poland, near the Slovak border. On the way we had to stop and just admire the views, which were magnificent.

5FA92075-31BC-464C-B763-6580B8C0805E

In the other hand it was very good we couldn’t stay in Slovakia longer than just a couple of hours, we would have bought too many pairs of shoes from the local ”CityMarket”.

Day 3 (8th July, 2018)

”Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

– George Santayana –

I don’t know how to start to tell you about Day 3. The word, which describes it the most would be ”upsetting”. Our main purpose of this roadtrip was to visit the site of Auschwitz-Birkenau also known as the Nazi death camp during the second world war. This camp has become a symbol of the Holocaust, the violation of basic human rights. This is the worst possible scenario what racism and intolerance can lead to. We should never forget our past and let the history to repeat itself. Visit to Auschwits-Birkenau should be compulsory for every human being in this planet.

6FB2990E-50B9-419A-A952-E4B1587C7E9E

Maybe the best way to visit the site of Auschwitz-Birkenau would be a day tour from Krakow. We had booked the ticket online beforehand, which was a good thing, because there was a long line in front of the ticket sale. It takes approx. 1 hour by car from Krakow to Oswiecim where the concentration camp is situated. There are two different sites; the Main camp (Auschwitz I) and Birkenau (Auschwitz II). The main camp is the oldest part of Auschwitz. It consists of several buildings ”blocks” where the prisoners were held. We had a guided tour and it was so shocking to hear how the prisoners were treated. No words can describe the misery and despair of the prisoners, just ordinary people, men and women from different nationalities and cultures. Most of them died as a result of starvation, torture, disease, medical experiments and collective executions. It was a systematic destruction of human beings.

96241B36-C8A4-45ED-B5FA-0252789CB5FD

The second part of the concentration camp is Birkenau, also known as Auschwitz II, which is situated in the village of Brzezinka, three kilometers from the main camp. It was the largest concentration camp and the place where the most people died, the place where the mass extermination of the Jews was executed. Approximately one million of Jews were murdered in Birkenau. There were four buildings containing gas chambers and furnaces for burning the corpses of the victims. You can see from the pictures below that the Nazis built the railroad to improve the efficiency of the mass extermination, the victims were unloaded from the freight wagons to the platform where the selection was made. SS physicians made the selections and maybe the best known physician was Doctor Josef Mengele , known as the angel of death, who conducted also deadly human experiments on prisoners. They picked out those who were capable of labor and useful for the moment. The sick, the elderly, pregnant women, children and other regarded as ”useless” were led to the gas chamber and killed.

”After the selection process on the railway platform those who were to be murdered in the gas chambers were assured that they were going to take a shower. Fake showerheads were fixed to the ceiling of the gas chambers. Beaten and intimidated by SS dogs, 2000 victims were crammed into the chamber, an area of approximately 210 square meters. The chamber door was locked and zyclon B was poured in. The bodies were stripped of gold teeth and jewellery, their hair was cut off, then bodies were burnt in the crematorium. Victims’ personal documents were destroyed.”

63193B2C-C9F1-4FBC-9485-326159EF890B

There are some pictures of the belongings of the victims. It was devastating to see the tons of shoes which once belonged to someone, the clothes of children, tons of hair and other personal belongings. No words can describe the cruelty and evil what have been the destiny of these people.

D642DC71-DC6B-4B18-A303-FC361212AB3D

We coudn’t leave the site of Auschwitz – Birkenau without any tears. It was a very emotional and shocking visit at the same time. May all the victims of Auschwitz – Birkenau rest in peace. We should all try to make the effort to build this world to be better place where people can live in peace, respecting and accepting others.

This place is really worth of seeing and visiting.

Day 2 (7th July, 2018)

7A8DCEBE-6A59-46EF-85FD-0335DDC8C214After very long day and many kilometers behind us, we didn’t need to wait for Mr sandman to arrive. We stayed our first night in a place called Przystanek Rospuda, which is located in a small town called Raczki, Poland. It is a very cozy B&B type of  guest house with 5 rooms upstairs. If we were interested in kayaking, we would have had a good chance to try it. Unfortunately we had also a quite tight schedule for day 2, so we had to hit the road again. Our target was to be in Krakow late in the evening and if you look at the map, you can easily observe how big country Poland really is and it might take more than just a couple hours to drive from north to south.

See the map of our route for Day 2. We drove approx. 600 km.

633020E6-C096-4549-B8D1-92ED5F55C36C

Although we had chosen the shortest route via Warsaw, driving through small towns was proceeding very slowly especially between Raczki – Warsaw, because there aren’t so many highways to speed up a bit. Basically the average speed was around 70 km per hour. Driving from Warsaw to Krakow was much quicker and all credit goes to the long higway sections.

While driving I noticed that Polish landscape is very flat. This must be a huge advantage for the farmers to cultivate the land. No wonder that Polish cereal production is one the largest in Europe. Based on Eurostat statistics of harvested production and cultivation area of cerals Poland is among the top three.  When driving through the countryside, you can see endless grain fields all the way on the both sides of the road.

D4A6E1E0-3FE3-483D-A2FC-DA9D8BE0A71A

We saw many graveyards on the way, which were located a bit outside of small towns. We decided to visit one just to see how beautiful places they are. People have brought lots of beautiful flowers and candles to the tombs.

As we have really tight schedule and I occasionally face some technical problems with the WiFi, I’m publishing my blogs few days late…

Day 1 (6th July, 2018)

After 4 hours sleep Finnish version of Thelma and Louise was ready to hop on the car and start their 12 days roadtrip ”Tour de mer Baltique”. On Friday morning we took a ferry from Helsinki Länsisatama harbor to Tallinn, Estonia from where the exact roadtrip began on the 6th July. When our ferry arrived in Tallinn at 11:00 am, we didn’t know the fact that the day in a car is gonna be very long.

FF462D02-189C-48C2-ADA9-EBE7F0A4844D

We were far too optimistic with the plan and the result was that we had a quite challenging time schedule for the first day. Our aim was to reach the border of Poland and the hotel Przystanek Rospuda by 9:30 pm. So basically we drove through all the baltic countries within one day. Below the driven route Via Baltica. We definately do not recommend to accomplish this activity during just ”one” day including only couple of short pitstops.

01847D66-94CB-4D50-ACA3-7E37046C2A55
First day leg was approx. 700 kilometers.

In general the roads of Via Baltica are in very good condition. There was a huge road work ongoing on the road E67 between Stalilionine – Silaiciai in Lithuania. After 30 min frusration in the traffic jam, we decided to take another route through the city of Panevezys, which was a good decision.

If you are able to reserve more days for Via Baltica, Riga – the capital of Latvia would be an ideal city in a half way to stay over night. The coastline of Latvia is very beautiful and in case if you happen to travel during hot summer days, don’t miss the beach of Jurmala. There are plenty of free spots to set your towel.

As all the Baltic countries are part of EU nowadays, there aren’t any customs formalities when crossing the borders. Only thing which gives you a hint that you have already entered to the next country is the license plate of an oncoming car. We were also amazed at the invasion of the huge heavy trucks on those roads. The trucks practically occupied the roads especially after Polish border very late at night. It seems that people are saving money on electricity, because there were no street lights or any lights on. We hardly found our way to the hotel through the darkness.

Landscape along the way is mostly green and full of grain fields.  Like in Finland there is ”a church in the middle” almost in every little village. This is definately a good route to central Europe and money exchange is not needed, because euro is a valid currency in baltic countries. If you feel a bit homesick, you can grab a meal from Hesburger on the way.
